Come usare il verbo avere in inglese

Per esprimere il verbo avere in inglese in inglese si utilizza il verbo “to have”, in una delle due forme “to have” o “to have got”. Utilizziamo il verbo “to have” sia per parlare di un oggetto che possediamo, sia per descrivere una qualità di una persona o da un oggetto, ad esempio quando facciamo una descrizione:

• I have got a computer. = Io ho un computer.
• You have got brown eyes. = Tu hai gli occhi marroni.

In inglese il verbo “to have” ha un significato più ampio del semplice possesso: infatti, lo troviamo anche in espressioni come “have breakfast” (fare colazione), “have a walk” (fare una passeggiata), “have to do something” (dover fare qualcosa).

Differenza tra have e have got

Osservate queste due espressioni:

• I have a car.
• I have got a car.

Che differenza c’è tra di esse? Nessuna: entrambe hanno lo stesso significato e sono corrette dal punto di vista grammaticale. La forma “to have got” è preferita dai britannici, mentre la forma “to have” è tipicamente americana, anche se ormai si è estesa alla maggior parte di coloro che parlano inglese.

Potete utilizzare la forma che preferite; ricordate però che nella forma interrogativa, la forma “to have” utilizza come ausiliare “do” mentre la forma “have got” utilizza il “got”:

• Do you have a pen?
• Have you got a pen?

In inglese americano l’ausiliare “got” viene utilizzato anche al posto di “have”:

• You got a beautiful shirt = Hai una bella camicia.

A differenza delle forme “to have” e “to have got” tuttavia, quest’ultima espressione è molto informale e si utilizza esclusivamente nella lingua parlata.
